Bio

Flying Pony Studios is the studio site of artist, Sara Light-Waller. It is the companion site to Lucina Press, which specializes in illustrated speculative & new pulp fiction. Together, they create a whole pulp experience for pulp fans.

Sara attended the prestigious scientific illustration program at the University of Arizona in the late 1980’s. She’s worked as an illustrator for large publishers such as McGraw-Hill and Lippincott and many small presses and independent authors. Her award-winning artwork has appeared in museum collections, books, magazines, newspapers, trade and science journals and in educational materials, in print and online. She’s also an independent art teacher.

For her pulp art, Sara draws inspiration from the best of the early 20th century pulp illustrators — George and Jerome Rozen, Walter Baumhofer, Rafael DeSoto, Virgil Finlay, and Edd Cartier. She works in many different mediums including watercolors, acrylics, casein pen & ink, graphite and coquille. Through painstaking study she creates pulp art which feels vintage even when the subject matter is more modern.
